At the start of the week Nicklas Bendtner looked set to be on his way to join Eintracht Frankfurt; today it is reported that a deal is dead.
The Danish international is something of a misfit at The Emirates these days; discarded on loan to Sunderland and then Juventus.
Last season he didn’t score a single goal in Turin and it appears that was a reality check for the striker as he started to look for clubs perhaps below the highest echelons of European football.
According to a report in local paper Frankfurter Rundschau the deal will be officially cancelled today as while the club were pleased with the impression Bendtner had on the director of football and other hierarchy; they simply would not stretch to the salary he wanted in order to sign a three-year deal.
But then again I am beginning to wonder if Frankfurt even needed him in the first place.
When I saw that Swansea City had beaten Haaglandia 10-0 yesterday I thought; ‘Nothing will beat that’.
But then I saw the result from Frankfurt’s pre-season friendly had come through; and they had romped to an 11-0 thrashing against Buchonia Flieden.
Almost 4,000 fans were in attendance as Frankfurt took apart the German fifth tier side with nothing but a hint of mercy in their play.
And the fact recent striker signing Joselu bagged five of the goals suggests their interest in Bendtner is slightly indulgent anyway.
But then again Buchonia are not exactly world-beaters; in fact they are way, way off it.
So the fact they bagged so many goals should be taken with a pinch of salt.
What shouldn’t is the interest in Sparta Prague’s Czech Republic international Vaclav Kadlec; which is due to heighten this week.
With goals in abundance in pre-season and Kadlec being lined up the fact is Frankfurt will not see paying Bendtner’s handsome wages as a worthwhile investment.
But for those Gunners fans that are sick of the sight of the Dane have no fear.
News from the rumour mill suggests Malaga will be pouncing on a deal imminently.
