Ex-Manchester United starlet strikes again - Could Ravel Morrison be a starter next season?

West Ham Dugout

West Ham United must be happy with the form of Ravel Morrison so far this summer.

At the weekend we ran a story on the performances of two former Manchester United starlets in pre-season friendlies.

Firstly Kenji Gorre grabbed another goal for Swansea City in pre-season. He followed up his goal against Excelsior by notching another in the 10-0 thrashing against Haaglandia on Wednesday.

But once again he was not the only former United starlet on target yesterday; in fact it was the same lad who bagged a goal alongside Gorre at the weekend.

Ravel Morrison scored against Cork City in a 6-2 win during The Hammers first pre-season friendly and he was once again at it after banging in a strike against Borehamwood yesterday.

He put Sam Allardyce’s men up after just 18 minutes in a game that ended 3-0 in what was a largely tame affair from both sides.

But for Morrison it is another indicator of just how serious he is taking pre-season; as he harbours hopes of making it into the first-team in 2013-14.

Talk of him going back out on loan to Birmingham City this year has been quashed and Morrison himself has spoken of his desire in recent interviews:

"Pre-season has been good and I've enjoyed the whole trip so far. I've just enjoyed the work and the whole group has done well," he told the club's official website.

"Hopefully I can get an opportunity. I've just got to carry on working hard in pre-season and show the manager what I can do."

The 20-year-old has certainly been showing what he can do in pre-season and after a difficult start to his footballing career appears to finally be showing the natural talent that saw Sir Alex Ferguson hold him in such high regard when he was at Old Trafford.

West Ham have plenty of midfield options in their team already and the rumour is more will be on the way but at the moment Morrison has been one of their star players in the off-season.

Harder tasks are yet to come with the likes of Mainz, Hamburg and Bournemouth likely to be more challenging than the fixtures against Cork City and Borehamwood.

But if he can perform similarly in those ties; then who is to say Ravel Morrison couldn’t be in the starting line-up against Cardiff City on the 17th August.
