This week Liverpool missed out on one of their top transfer targets this summer in the form of Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
In the end Shakhtar Donetsk sold him to Borussia Dortmund for a fee in the region of £23.8 million. Dubbed the ‘Armenian Zidane’ he has been given the opportunity to take over from Mario Gotze after he left for Bayern Munich this summer.
Now the 24-year-old is wearing his old shirt and despite only signing for the team a couple of days ago he was put in the fold straight away for the clubs marquee friendly with FC Basel this Wednesday.
And it will not be music to the ears of Liverpool fans to hear that he immediately showed what he can do in the tie at St-Jakob Park against the Europa League semi-finalists.
Dortmund ran out 3-1 winners in Switzerland and Mkhitaryan was in fine form; highlighting why he was so highly sought after this summer.
First off he went charging down the right hand side and squared the ball to Marco Reus who was then left with the enviable task of tapping the ball into an empty net.
And he showed his ambidexterity later on when he put Dortmund 2-1 up. Judging the ball coming over his right shoulder he smashed it home on his left foot beyond Yann Sommer into the far corner.
A late goal from Jonas Hoffman finished off the scoring by which time Mkhitaryan was sitting on the bench; happy with a fine days’ work.
I think we should all be pretty gutted not to be seeing this talented midfield maestro week-in week-out next season; not just Liverpool fans.
