Benteke handed in a transfer request earlier this week and former crowd favourite Carew has suggested Benteke doesn’t deserve to be at the club for the way he’s acted after the chance the side gave him.
Carew took to Twitter to criticise Benteke for his desire to leave after a superb first season in the Premier League, which saw him score 19 goals, helping the Midlands club to stay in English football’s top flight.
“If Benteke wants to leave , let him go if so. Then he doesn’t deserve to be part of Villa. That’s his loss , not our loss,” said Carew.
Aston Villa will move on now that Benteke has played his hand and it seems increasingly unlikely that he will be talked into staying by manager Paul Lambert.
Villa have a very young and vibrant squad heading into the new season and the last thing they need is players in place who think they are bigger than the football club or players who aren’t fully committed to the cause.
It would be pointless for the club to keep Benteke in the team if he’s not completely happy because then the side obviously won’t get the best out of him, despite the fact he’s a professional footballer.
Villa will also net a very large fee which will give Lambert the chance to improve various parts of the squad and possibly bring in support for Nicklas Helenius who could quickly find himself under huge pressure leading the Aston Villa frontline.
Carew’s comments which suggest Benteke doesn’t deserve to be part of Aston Villa, as angry and as close to a knee jerk reaction as you can get, do have some merit.
Villa are one of the biggest clubs in English football, well supported and with a history as deep and as rich as any of the other top sides around England and Europe.
Benteke has effectively shown the club that he was using them as a vehicle to progress onto a bigger move because if he believes Aston Villa can consolidate as a top ten Premier League side again, the logic in his decision to move is confusing.
It also can’t be anything to do with cash or his current status in the side because reports suggested Villa were ready to offer him a bigger deal to stay at the club and he was clearly the number one forward at Villa Park last season.
It’s a shame because he could have gone on to be one of the best strikers in Aston Villa’s history and a player who could have led the club’s charge to break into the top ten and then the top six and the European places.
It is a loss for Villa in the respect they look likely to lose a key player but they retain everything which is great about the foundations of the football club, which will never change.
Do you agree with Carew’s comments that Benteke doesn’t deserve to be a Villa player?
