1. 1919 - The Treaty of Versailles is hand delivered to the U.S. Senate by President Wilson

2. 1925 - In Dayton, Tennessee, the so-called 'Monkey Trial' begins with John Thomas Scopes, a young high school science teacher, accused of teaching evolution in violation of a Tennessee state law

3. 1940 - The Luftwaffe launches the Battle of Britain

4. 1973 - The Bahamas becomes independent from Great Britain

5. 1965 - The Rolling Stones have their first number 1 single on the US Billboard charts - I Can't Get No Satisfaction from the album Out of Our Heads

6. 1985 - Coca-Cola resumes selling the old formula of Coke, renamed 'Coca-Cola Classic'. It is also announced that they will continue to sell 'New' Coke

7. 1989 - Mel Blanc, the 'man of a thousand voices', including cartoon characters Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig, dies in Los Angeles

8. 1991 - Boris Yeltsin is sworn in as Russia's first elected President

9. 1995 - Hugh Grant appears on late-night television’s The Tonight Show less than two weeks after being arrested with a Hollywood prostitute. The show’s host, Jay Leno, famously asked the English actor, 'What the hell were you thinking ?'

10. 1998 - The World Bank approves a $700m loan to Thailand

11. 2009 - A 27 year old man from Spain is the first person to die of a fatal bull attack during the Pamplona running of the bulls in fourteen years
