There is still plenty of time for Liverpool to add to the excellent business they have already done in this year’s transfer market, and if they do end up selling Luis Suarez then one or two more high profile signings might be the offing, but it is worth looking at the four players they have already brought in.
Simon Mignolet was signed from Sunderland for around £9million, and is expected to be a serious rival to Pepe Reina for the number one shirt at Liverpool if the Spanish keepers stays this summer. If he starts the season as first choice, MIgnolet will clearly be a crucial figure at Anfield next season.
Elsewhere Kolo Toure was brought in on a free to add some depth to the defence, whilst La Liga pair Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto arrived for roughly £7million each to add further dynamism to Liverpool’s attack.
If Suarez does leave, there will be plenty of pressure on Aspas to help replace the Uruguayan’s impact upfront, although Daniel Sturridge will probably be the key man instead of the Spaniard. If Aspas can maintain the form he demonstrated at Celta Vigo last season he could prove a fantastic signing, although he needs to curb his sometimes fiery disposition.
It is not clear how much of a first team role Toure will play, but the Ivorian is an experienced head and eminently competent.
Alberto is much more of an unknown, having spent last season on loan at Barcelona B in the Segunda Division in Spain. The 20-year-old scored 11 times in 38 league matches last season, and will be a threat cutting inside from the left-flank, but might be eased in slowly by Brendan Rodgers at the start of the year.
Of the four, Mignolet and Aspas have the most potential to make an impact at next season, and although the Belgian keeper is slightly more likely to command a first team place straight away, Aspas has the talent to have the biggest effect on his new side’s fortunes.
Liverpool fans, which of your new signings are you most excited to see in action?
