Liverpool transfer target Mamadou Sakho has said he’s flattered by interest from the club and may have to leave PSG to further his career.
Sakho has been touted as a possible defender for Brendan Rodgers’ side over the last couple of weeks and he may have just given his biggest plea yet for Liverpool to make an official approach for him.
Sakho has revealed he doesn’t want to be a bench warmer at PSG and the fact he’s aware of Liverpool’s interest and talks about the club in a positive way could be an indication that he’d be open to an Anfield switch.
“I am flattered by the interest of historic clubs like Liverpool - I want to play for this club all my life (PSG), but it is clear that I do not want to sit on the bench,” he told Le10 Sport.
That suggests that if Liverpool want to go about a possible deal, they need to prey on the things they can offer him which PSG can’t because that seems to be how they can push any deal through.
His love and admiration for Paris is quite clear so Liverpool can stress the football benefits of what they are trying to achieve to him.
If Liverpool move Martin Skrtel on this summer, Sakho will have an undoubted position in the back four under Brendan Rodgers and that’s what he seems to be looking for in a move.
Even if the club retains Skrtel, for them to be able to get Sakho, they need to make him the promise that he can play regularly in the back four, especially considering he’ll want to nail down a place in the France team too ahead of the World Cup next summer.
Brendan Rodgers has shown a remarkable ability so far this summer to pick up talented players on good value deals, which has created a young and vibrant squad at Anfield.
“He'll see what his status is in the team... One thing is certain, Liverpool is always on the lookout,” said PSG boss Laurent Blanc.
The fact Liverpool are constantly searching for the next exciting player should appeal to Sakho because he can be part of the transformation which is going at the club at the moment.
From a football point of view, Sakho has the chance to mix it alongside the younger players at Liverpool and if he performs consistently well, he’d make himself priceless over the next few years at Liverpool.
Sakho is certainly a player who could do a solid job in the Liverpool defence. He’s young, ambitions, hungry and determined to succeed and that winning mentality is something Rodgers has made quite clear he wants in his team.
Is the time right for Liverpool to seriously target Sakho? Will his love for PSG stop the move?
