Vermaelen injured: Five defenders Arsenal can target this summer

Vermaelen Captain

Thomas Vermaelen’s back injury means Arsenal surely have to look at signing another defender ahead of the new season.

The Gunners captain will miss the club’s pre-season tour for the lower back injury, which has emphasised just how much Arsenal need another top quality defender in that area of the squad.

All the attention with Arsene Wenger’s side has been on the attacking players they have been linked with and made offers for but it’s important they draft in some cover at the back in case Vermaelen isn’t ready for the start of the season.

Here are five players they could consider.

Martin Skrtel

It’s still a bit up in the air as to whether the Liverpool centre back will be at Anfield by the end of the summer.

He has been linked with a move back to Zenit St Petersburg but in terms of defenders who may be available with Premier League experience, there are few better options than the Slovakian.

Aleksandar Dragovic

The Austrian is a defender who was linked with the Gunners towards the back end of last season, he’s also been mentioned in connection with Manchester United.

He has two-years left to run on his current deal with FC Basel but he’s younger at 22-years-old, which makes him a solid proposition for Wenger in the respect that he’d have a defender he could build future sides around.

Ashley Williams

The Swansea City captain looks set for a move to a bigger Premier League side.

He’s slightly contradictory to the way Arsenal like to play their football in the respect that he’s a well built, big and aggressive central defender who personifies the no nonsense side of the game.

He would compliment the other players in the defensive section of the squad perfectly.

Adil Rami

Rami is someone Arsenal were linked with over the second half of last season and he’s similar to Skrtel in the respect that he’s older and brings a bit more experience to the table.

Arsenal could take advantage of Valencia’s financial state with a decent offer, which is difficult for them to turn down and Wenger could be very attracted by the prospect of gaining a well established and respected centre back.

Toby Alderweireld

Vermaelen's Belgian teammate is currently looking for a move from Ajax with one year left on his contract. Norwich and Liverpool are interested, but Arsenal may be tempted to enquire given the likely knockdown price.

He also has the versatility to cover at full-back, and would offer strength in depth in return for Champions League opportunities.

What do you think? Who do you want to see Arsenal sign for the back four?
