A round-up of news and views relating to Chelsea over the past 24 hours.
Jose Mourinho has said he intends to use Dider Drogba as an example for the younger players at Chelsea. The striker scored 157 goals for Chelsea, and Mourinho says he will use Drogba to show that the youngsters at the club should listen to him.
"I think Didier Drogba, as a man and as a professional, is a good guy to be looked at as a very special player in the history of this club," he said
"I can use Didier as a profile to persuade the young boys to follow me because he did follow me from day one."
One man who has already apparently listened to Mourinho is new signing Marco Van Ginkel, who was convinced to join Chelsea by a phone-call from the Portuguese manager. Van Ginkel joined Chelsea from Vitesse Arnhem in an £8 million move last week, following Andre Schurrle as Mourinho’s second signing in his second spell at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are close to winning the race for highly-rated teenager Isaiah Brown, and will only have to pay a nominal fee to West Brom for the 16-year-old. Brown is training with Chelsea this week, with a compensation package set to be agreed that could see the Baggies receive as little as £209,000.
Having missed out on Edinson Cavani, who is expected to join PSG, Chelsea might turn to Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke, who is being chased by several clubs this summer. Aston Villa are desperate to keep the 22-year-old, and have placed a £25million price-tag on his head, with Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool also monitoring the situation.
Norwich City have turned down a second bid from Chelsea for goalkeeper John Ruddy. Chelsea are keen to bring in Ruddy as a back-up for Petr Cech after Thibaut Courtois agreed to a third loan spell at Atletico Madrid, but might have to look elsewhere with Norwich set on keeping the 26-year-old.
Chelsea are considering an attempt to hijack Liverpool’s move for Sporting Lisbon centre-back Tiago Ilori. The Portuguese club value Ilori at £8.5million, and have reportedly rejected two bids from Liverpool already.
Barcelona might rekindle their interest in Chelsea’ David Luiz if they are unable to sign Thiago Silva this summer. The PSG centre-back is Barcelona’s number one target as they revamp their defence, but the Ligue 1 champions are unwilling to sell Silva having signed him just last summer.
