Manchester United fans would be forgiven for growing tired of the Thiago Alcantara saga. But until the Spaniard’s future is resolved one way or the other expect the stories to continue.
The latest suggests the Barcelona midfielder has a “good chance” of joining the English champions. And how do they know? Because a highly placed source said so. Not just any source. This one is important.
The report adds that it is unlikely any deal will be done before United leave for their pre-season tour. But in truth there is nothing new in the story: just a re-cap of other people’s whispers.
The story also claims captain Nemanja Vidic will be offered a one-year contract extension in the coming months, with his current deal due to expire next summer.
In a clear case of ignoring fact to generate a little more fiction, it is being claimed that Wayne Rooney is still on the wanted list of both Chelsea and Arsenal; this despite Moyes stating categorically that the England striker is going nowhere.
Completely ignoring the new manager’s swift but emphatic statement that Rooney is not for sale, the story claims his teammates have grown tired of the “sideshow” that often follows the 27-year-old.
That, along with the fact that Rooney hasn’t come out himself to say he is staying, means both Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho are said to be hovering with their chequebooks.
And finally, United midfielder Nick Powell is said to be a loan target for Norwich City. At first glance, it seems an ideal move for all parties, as the Canaries look to build an exciting young squad and Powell seeks the top flight game-time his talent deserves.
But much will depend on Powell’s pre-season performances, and how willing Moyes is to play him in the first team during the upcoming campaign.
