When it came, it was both swift and emphatic.
“Wayne Rooney is not for sale,” said David Moyes during his first press conference. “He’s a Manchester United player and will remain a Manchester United player.”
So after all the anticipation about what Moyes would say and how he would say it, what revelation he would make over comings or goings to commemorate his first official date with the media – in the end it was as controlled and understated as his predecessor.
At least those Rooney rumours can be put to be bed now. Moyes will not go back on such an unequivocal statement so soon into his tenure.
And Rooney may soon have a new teammate, with the latest reports from Spain claiming Thiago Alcantara will be a United player by the end of next week.
Newspaper Sport claims the Barcelona midfielder has decided to move to Old Trafford and that a switch is only days away.
“The international midfielder of FC Barcelona is clear to continue his career in the Premier League,” the report says, “specifically in the ranks of one of the English giants, Manchester United, committing for the space of five seasons.”
The story also says Thiago has met with Moyes, despite the United manager’s refusal to comment on any possible incoming players.
But as with most reports concerning the 22-year-old, the possibility of a reunion with Pep Guardiola remains, the story claiming the player has considered a switch to Bayern Munich but that United – for now – remain his first choice.
