Yaya Sanogo was a doubt for the quarter final with Uzbekistan. But he scored along with players who have Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle United connections.
It has certainly been a dramatic 48 hours for Arsenal’s only summer signing so far Yaya Sanogo.
First he was awarded his squad number, the number ‘22’ after Francis Coquelin was shipped out on loan to SC Freiburg.
Then he collided with French Under-20 team-mate Mouhamadou Naby Sarr; a 6ft 5ins man of steel.
Obviously his collision with the Lyon youngster was always going to hurt; and hurt it did.
Sanogo was taken to a Turkish hospital yesterday to check if he had a broken rib; however no serious damage was done and the bruised and beat up former Auxerre striker was given the OK.
But he was not immediately passed fit for the French Under-20 sides clash with Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals of the Under-20 World Cup; in fact he was classed as doubtful.
But Sanogo was cleared to feature in the game and he had another excellent run-out as the French side sauntered to a 4-0 victory.
Sanogo was the man who got the ball rolling; bundling in a cross from Jean-Christophe Bahebeck to make it 1-0.
Reported Chelsea, Newcastle and Wolfsburg target Kurt Zouma then found the back of the net with a lovely diving header to put the cherry, on the icing, on the top of this cake.
Sanogo led the line well and survived the entire 90 minutes as France could have had five or six in a dominant display that has surely cemented their place as one of the tournament favourites; despite their early arrogance letting them down.
And with Sanogo, who now has four goals in the competition, they won’t have to worry about hitting the back of the net.
