Should Everton consider a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Clint Dempsey?

The American forward would not be the most glamorous signing Roberto Martinez could make, but he could add some bite to Everton’s attack, and Tottenham Hotspur could be willing to sell Clint Dempsey this summer.

Roberto Martinez’ unenviable first task at Everton will see the Spaniard attempt to keep pace with the ToffeesPremier League rivals in a transfer window that could see an unprecedented amount of business.

All of the top five are expected to make significant additions to their squad, whilst Merseyside rivals Liverpool have already splashed the cash on several players in their attempts to challenge for the top four again next season.

Everton were in the running for a Champions League spot right up to the last few weeks of last season, but ensuring they are in that position again next year looks a very difficult task for Martinez.

However there might be some opportunity to benefit from their rival’s transfer business, as the reshaping of squads will undoubtedly mean some fine players become available in the next few months.

Andre Villas-Boas’ plans to overhaul Tottenham Hotspur’s attack could see several players put on the market, one of which could be Clint Dempsey, and Everton should consider making a move for the American this summer.

Dempsey has plenty of Premier league experience, and is a proven goal scorer despite rarely playing as an out and out striker. Last season he struggled to nail down a starting place at Spurs, but still managed to score several important goals, notably in both matches against Manchester United.

Unless Everton are ready to sell both Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines this summer, which they certainly should not be planning, they are unlikely to have huge reserves of cash available.

Dempsey cost Spurs £6million last summer, and if they were ready to let him leave for less than that this year the American could be a fine acquisition for Everton, as they could hope to get the forward to replicate his Fulham form by playing him more regularly than he was used at White Hart Lane last season.
