Maxi, Maxi Rodriguez
Run down the wing for me
Do do do do do, do do do do do, do do do do do, do do do do do
These lyrics when applied to the Buddy Holly classic ‘Heartbeat’ give you a song sang on many occasions at Anfield and afar when the Argentine winger had grabbed a goal for The Reds.
You see, Maxi Rodriguez may have only been at Liverpool FC for two-and-a-half-years, but in that time he had a great rapport with the fans and also showcased his ability on occasions with simply unplayable performances.
He will best be remembered for two memorable hat-tricks against Fulham and Birmingham City respectively and for being the scourge of Chelsea on more than one occasion.
But the lure of home called for Maxi and he decided to sign for Newell’s Old Boys in the summer of 2012.
But such was his close relationship with Liverpool’s fans he left an open letter saying goodbye to his adoring fans in which he said:
I have tried to give everything every day that I was wearing the LFC crest. It has been a great honour to defend this shirt during two and a half years. I am returning home with a suitcase full of great memories, good friends within the team and also within this great family that works every day in the club. Thanks a lot for your support. You can NOT imagine what a great honour it was for me when the Kop sang, 'Maxi, Maxi Rodríguez runs down the wing for me da da da da dada...'
Hasta la vista.
And in doing so he cemented his place as an eternal favourite at the club.
Now he is back with Newell’s and fighting for silverware in the Copa Libertadores.
His team are up against Ronaldinho’s Atletico Mineiro in the semi-final; and took a massive step toward securing a final berth with an excellently timed run and header, and predictably passionate celebration, as the Argentine outfit won 2-0.
They will now travel to Belo Horizonte next Wednesday with a commanding lead as they attempt to win the Copa for the first time in their history.
What are your memories of Maxi Rodriguez?
