Liverpool - One squad position, the five defenders tipped to join

Who should Liverpool bring in as a defensive recruit this summer?

Brendan Rodgers has made it clear that he’s looking to sign two more players, with one of those signings being a defender.

“Certainly another attacking player will really benefit us, and probably another defender. We'll see how it develops over the course of the next few months,” Rodgers told the Liverpool website.

So which of the defenders connected to the club would be the best investment?

Kyriakos Papadopoulos

The Greek central defender has the same length of time left on his deal with Schalke as Skrtel does with Liverpool.

That won’t make him cheap and could mean Liverpool’s budget gets stretched to the absolute limit if they make an official approach for him.

However, Papadopoulos is an extremely aggressive defender, notorious for showing his bad temper when he loses and that’s the sort of mentality Brendan Rodgers needs at the club.

Mamadou Sakho

Sakho would probably be the easiest to sign of all the defensive players Liverpool have been linked with.

He’s 23-years-old so fits in with the youth policy of the club and only has a year left on his current deal which means Rodgers shouldn’t have any problem getting the deal past the board.

He’s also got experience for France at six different levels which means he’ll be well suited to the pressure of playing on the very biggest stage.

Ashley Williams

Swansea’s Ashley Williams is a player Liverpool have been linked with for a long time and in terms of Premier League experience, he’s the ideal defender.

His arrival may depend on a renewed push from Rodgers as he has already tried, and failed, to get a move for Williams past the Liverpool board.

He’d be arriving at the very peak of his game and able to dominate a centre back slot at Liverpool as he heads well into his 30s.

Tiago Ilori

Ilori would be a good bit of business for Liverpool because of his age, potential and reported cost of around the £3 million mark.

However, snapping Ilori up alone is dangerous because the 20-year-old has nowhere near the same level of experience and basic authority they really need.

If Liverpool do complete a deal for the Portuguese defender then expect him to be a squad player, possibly used in the Development Squad until he’s needed as cover in the first team.

Toby Alderweireld

Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld could still be available if the club can’t agree a deal with Bayer Leverkusen.

Talks between the Belgian’s representatives and the German club seem to have broken down, which could give Liverpool a chance to nip in and try to work out a deal ahead of next season.

He’s ideal for Liverpool because he seems perfectly fit for the challenge of Premier League football and he’d bring to the table experience of playing in the Champions League which Liverpool are aiming for.

Who would you like to see at the club? Is there another player you’d prefer Liverpool to look at?
