The NeoGeo X handheld console finally gets some new games with the suitably named Mega Games Volume 1 pack and its been worth the wait.
The iconic SNK NeoGeo games console first launched in 1990 has garnered a resurgence in popularity over the last few months since the launch of the NeoGeo X handheld/console hybrid at the end of 2012.
The NeoGeo was one of the most expensive consoles of the 90’s with arcade perfect games costing upwards of £200 each (roughly £340 in today’s money). These sorts of prices pretty much made the machine solely for wealthy gamers only. The high cost and low production runs of games compared to the mass market consoles of the time such as the Megadrive and the Super NES means that even today buying the original console and a few of the more common games can set you back at least a couple of hundred pounds, if you get lucky. Rarer games such as the original Metal Slug typically going for upwards of £1500 on auction sites when it does turn up for sale.
Fortunately when the Neo-Geo X was released it was bundled with twenty built in games including the aforementioned Metal Slug giving those who wanted one back in the 90's along with a new generation of fans a taste of what made this console so desirable.
However, it all went a bit quiet on the release front soon after launch with owners left wondering when more games were coming out and considering that there were around 180 games released in in its original incarnation, could be forgiven for being a bit concerned especially after paying out £200 for the machine. Well, fear not, as the next instalment of NeoGeo classics has just come out and it seems well worth the wait.
The aptly named ‘NeoGeo X Mega Games Volume 1’ pack costs £59.99 and comes with 15 classic Neo-geo games on one game card. The game card also comes with a firmware update to improve a number of bugs relating to sound quality and picture ratio for when it’s played on the TV through the docking station. It also includes a new high speed charging cable. The full list of games in the pack is as follows:
- Metal Slug 2
- Top Hunter
- Samurai Showdown 3
- Savage Rain
- Super Sidekicks 3: The Next Glory
- The King of Fighters 96
- Blazing Star
- Kizuna Encounter Super Tag Battle
- Garou: Mark Of The Wolves
- Shock Troopers
- World Heroes 2 Jet
- The Last Blade
- Blues Journey
- Art of Fighting 3: The Path of The Warrior
Overall this collection is a must have for Neo-Geo X owners, not only because it practically doubles the library of games available for the system. The games themselves are varied too with classic one on fighting games like The King Of The Fighters 96, cult shoot ‘em up Blazing Star and Super Sidekicks 3, an over the top arcade football game. The games in the main are just as much fun today as they were when they first came out and cover many eras of the original NeoGeo's 14 year history so there's something for everyone's taste.
