Manchester United have made it clear to Wayne Rooney that he will have to submit an official transfer request if he wants to leave the club. There has been some confusion over whether he actually asked to leave Old Trafford following Sir Alex Ferguson’s suggestion last season.

Chelsea are set to complete the £8 million signing of Dutch midfielder Marco van Ginkel. Chelsea revealed in a statement that a fee has been agreed and the 20-year-old will sign subject to agreeing personal terms at Stamford Bridge and successfully completing a medical.

Andy Murray has admitted he made life difficult for himself in his win against Fernando Verdasco. Murray came from 2-0 down to secure a 3-2 sets victory which has sealed his place in the semi-finals of Wimbledon. He will face Jerzy Janowicz for a place in the final tomorrow.

Australia rugby union coach Robbie Deans says he’s baffled by Warren Gatland’s decision to drop Brian O’Driscoll. Deans says he thinks his side now have a much stronger chance of securing a win in the series decider this weekend, with the current score level at 1-1.

England batsman Nick Compton has lashed out at England in the build up to the first Ashes Test. Compton says he wasn’t given a fair chance at the top of England’s batting order as Andy Flower looks set to go with Alastair Cook and Joe Root as the opening pair for the Ashes.
