It is the will-he-won’t-he transfer conundrum of the summer, and today it appears he will, with Thiago Alcantara reportedly close to a move to Manchester United.
That is if you believe that talkative but mysterious fellow ‘club source’, who this time has said a deal to bring the player to Old Trafford is “very close”.
The 22-year-old would make a huge difference to David Moyes’ midfield, and would be a statement of intent as the former Everton boss looks to step out of the shadow of Sir Alex Ferguson. But fans will know that such deals have been close before, only to never materialise.
But it is now being hoped that Moyes may even be able to announce the deal at his first press conference. Fans will certainly hope so.
One midfielder seemingly not on his way to United – at least not yet – is Kevin Strootman.
The Dutchman has long been linked with a switch to the league champions, and his box-to-box style suggests he would be the ideal addition to a midfield sorely lacking in recent times.
But it is now being reported he will remain with current club PSV for at least one more season.
The Dutch club’s technical director Marcel Brands said, “Strootman we do not want to lose. He also knows himself that he will play at PSV for another season.”
Whether that means Moyes will move for former player Marouane Fellaini is a question that will be answered in due course.
