Arsenal have completed the signing of French striker Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre. The 20-year-old was available on a free after his contract expired at the French club, and he will join up with Arsenal after completing his participation at the Under-20 World Cup in Turkey.
Jack Wilshere has said he is encouraged by the reports linking Arsenal with stars like Gonzalo Higuain, but also stated that the club needed to bring in a few players this summer, not just the Argentine striker, in order to ensure they had a deep enough squad.
“You look at the type of players, like Higuain, we’re trying to bring in, and you’ve got to be encouraged,” said Wilshere.
“I think we need a few more - not to step right into the team but to add to the squad.”
Wilshere also suggested he would be delighted to see Wayne Rooney arrive at Arsenal this summer, saying that his England team-mate is the kind of player that can win a side trophies.
"He (Rooney) is the type of player who can win you trophies - and just to see his name on the team sheet brings fear to the opposition. We could do with a little more of that."
Arsenal have had a £18.5million bid for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender rejected, with the German club making it clear that the 24-year-old is not for sale at any price this transfer window. Leverkusen have sold Andre Schurrle to Chelsea and Dani Carvajal to Real Madrid already this summer, and are consequently under no financial pressure to sell perhaps indicating Arsenal should have attempted to complete a deal for Bender before the other transfers went through.
Arsene Wenger might now turn back to Marouane Fellaini in an attempt to strengthen his midfield, with Toulouse’s Etienne Capoue and Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan also rumoured to be targets for Arsenal this summer.
