Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has suggested Wayne Rooney may want a ‘fresh challenge’ away from Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson’s former deputy has said the only reason the striker may leave United is because he wants a fresh challenge in the game.

England spinner Graeme Swann is set to be fit for the first Ashes Test after an injury scare in the challenge match against Essex. Swann was hit on the arm by fast bowler Tymal Mills before going to a local hospital for an x-ray which revealed there was no break due to the impact.

Australia rugby union captain James Horwill has been cleared to play for Australia in the final Test against the Lions. Horwill was cited for stamping on the head of Alun Wyn Jones during the first Test but has now been cleared of any wrongdoing by two different panels.

Andy Murray survived some nervous moments in his match against Mikhail Youzhny to make it through to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. Murray was broken twice in the second set of the match but fought back to set up a last eight meeting against Fernando Verdasco.

Brazilian midfielder Paulinho has revealed he is leaving club side Corinthians, meaning Tottenham’s planned £17 million transfer for the player has moved closer to happening. The holding midfielder has also been linked with a switch to Real Madrid but Spurs are thought to be favourites to land him.
