Tevez scored 73 goals for City across four season, netting 17 in all competitions this term. He arrived in 2009 from archrivals Manchester United for a reported fee of £47 million at the age of 25 and undoubtedly hit the peak his powers during his time at the Etihad.
27-year-old Alvaro Negredo transferred that same year from Almeria to Sevilla where he has spent the last four years career, scoring a total of 85 goals for the La Liga side.
This term he scored an incredible 31 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions – 25 goals in the league alone and is undoubtedly one of the most coveted strikers on the continent this summer.
With the sale of Mario Balotelli to AC Milan in January and the recent departure of Tevez, new manager Manuel Pellegrini will be looking to bring in at least one top quality striker to aid City’s quest to reclaim the Premier League title from United next term.
At 6ft1”, Negredo is ideally suited to the rough and tumble of the English game and for his size he’s remarkably mobile, his movement is intelligent and his finishing technique is imply sublime. He is much more of a target man than Tevez ever was and he is in many ways more similar to Edin Dzeko.
However, where he is undoubtedly the ideal replacement for the outgoing Argentine is in his goal scoring talents – Dzeko is a fine forward but he managed less than half of Negredo’s tally last term (15 goals in 43 appearances for City).
With the diminishing likelihood that City can capture Edinson Cavani, for example, Negredo would be the ideal alternative. He is certainly a player who can challenge for the Golden Boot next term if he does move to England and he can subsequently help City in their hopes of getting the title back from United.
At his age, Negredo is the perfect age for a striker and for his buyout clause of reportedly £18 million he would represent exceptional value for money, compared to Cavani’s valuation of around £50 million at Napoli.
He could link up well with David Silva and new signing Jesus Navas who he will be familiar with from the Spain national team setup and it would be an exciting prospect to see how he would combine with Sergio Aguero, formerly of La Liga fame with Athletico Madrid.
