7. 1969 - Britain's Prince Charles is invested as the Prince of Wales

8. 1987 - One of the City's top investment bankers, Geoffrey Collier, receives the first conviction for insider dealing since it became illegal

9. 1997 - Hong Kong is handed back to the Chinese authorities - ending more than 150 years of British control

10. 2007 - The ban on smoking in enclosed public places comes into effect in England

11. 2008 - Nelson Mandela is taken off the United States terror watch list after president George W. Bush signs the bill that officially removes him from the list
