Manchester City weekend round-up: City have signed ‘the new Bale’ and strike trio linked

Jesus Navas playing for Sevilla

All the news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad this weekend…

Andres Iniesta has praised Manchester City’s Jesus Navas as the two men prepare for this evening’s Confederations Cup final.

The Barcelona midfielder has tipped the winger to make a huge impact at the Etihad, comparing him with one player in particular.

Navas is a very special player,” Iniesta said. “He is going to cause the defences in the Premier League a real problem when he plays for City.

The only player that I can compare him with that is already playing in England is Gareth Bale.”

If he is anything like as talented and inspirational, City could be in for quite a season.

With Navas and Fernandinho signed, Manuel Pellegrini is now likely to turn his attention to bringing in a new striker. And this weekend has seen him linked with three of them…none of whom (for once) are Edinson Cavani.

One report suggests the Chilean will return to former club Sevilla for a second time, to sign Alvaro Negredo.

West Ham have already had a bid for the Spaniard rejected earlier this month. But with a release clause of £18million, Pellegrini knows exactly how much it will cost to sign the 27-year-old.

And yet conflicting reports suggest City are in fact interested not in Negredo, but in Oscar Cardozo and Fred.

Brazilian striker Fred currently plays for Fluminense and is enjoying an impressive Confederations Cup campaign. At 29 he is one year younger than Benfica’s Cardozo, who has also been linked with a £10million move to Cardiff City in recent days.

The player’s agent has been quoted as saying, “There’s always been interest from the Premier League – but this is real interest.”

Whether he was talking about Cardiff, Manchester City or both may be revealed in due course.

One player still being linked with a move to the Blues is Real Madrid defender Pepe. And yet following the outstanding debut season of Matija Nastasic it is a move that makes little sense.

Pellegrini is said to be keen to pair Pepe with Vincent Kompany next season; although Real president Florentino Perez has previously dismissed the possibility of the Portuguese defender leaving this summer.

And finally, as he prepares to officially start work tomorrow, Pellegrini has spent the day in Manchester for, along with other things, a little suit shopping.

There is much to be done in the weeks ahead, as he attempts to wrestle the league title back from Manchester United.
