Liverpool weekend round-up: Mkhitaryan’s future and £10m defensive target a ‘bargain’

Heinrich Mkhitaryan

All the news, views and transfer rumours from Anfield this weekend…

Another day, another set of rumours surrounding the future of Liverpool target and current rumour mill favourite Henrikh Mkhitaryan. We ran a story earlier regarding the conflicting reports about the midfielder’s future – some linking him to Borussia Dortmund and others claiming a deal to the Reds was all but done.

Yesterday Tottenham were said to have entered the race, with a traditional transfer window gazumping. But the truth is we can’t see that one happening, with Anfield remaining the 24-year-old’s most likely destination regardless of how many more column inches he generates in the meantime.

A tweet from Russian football journalist Alexey Yaroshevsky yesterday claimed, “Henrikh Mkhitaryan WILL be a #LFC player in the next 72 hours, pending medical and official confirmation. Shakhtar source confirmed.”

It is a statement that could easily be dismissed as just another reporter making a 50/50 claim, if Yaroshevsky wasn’t the man who broke the news of deals for both Fernandinho and Willian in the past.

One player Liverpool look set to miss out on is Lille left-back Lucas Digne. The 19-year-old was believed to be high on Brendan Rodgers’ wish-list this summer. But reports earlier today from France suggest he is set for a move to Monaco.

Having seemingly missed out on one defender, Rodgers may do well to take the advice of Swansea City’s Ben Davies, who has claimed £10million for teammate Ashley Williams is a snip.

Liverpool are believed to be competing with Arsenal for Williams' signature. How true those rumours are remains to be seen. But Davies believes the centre-back could do a job for the best of them.

Last season I would say Ash was one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League,” he said.

A price of £10million or more to sign him is completely justified.”

Liverpool defender Danny Wilson has agreed a three-year deal to join Hearts, having spent last season on loan with the Scottish club.

And one man who may be joining him out the door is Jonjo Shelvey, who has again been linked with a move away, most likely to West Ham United, Swansea or Norwich.
