Five Chelsea players to watch in pre-season

Kevin De Bruyne

We highlight five players Chelsea fans should keep their eyes on this summer.

As July is at its advent professional footballers can start to think about getting back to work with many of them likely to be itching for the opportunity.

Chelsea go into the new season with Jose Mourinho back at the helm and plenty of impressive players returning from loan-spells ready to prove their worth to the Mourinho cause on tours in Asia and America.

So here are five players to keep your eyes on this summer.

Andre Schurrle

Obvious really but so far the only major incoming at Chelsea this summer has been the German international so naturally Chelsea fans will want to see what he is capable of.

It will also be interesting to see just where Mourinho uses him on the pitch. Capable of playing on the wing, through the middle of midfield and up front we may get a gauge as to which position Mourinho sees him by the time The Blues fly back from the States.

Jamal Blackman

Currently Chelsea only have one first-choice goalkeeper on the books in Petr Cech. Now while they are certainly likely to bring another one in the current young keepers at the squad should not be deterred from trying to claim a spot on the bench themselves.

Blackman featured against Manchester City in the immediate post-season friendlies last month and will hope to be used again. Returning loanee Matej Delac will feel the same now that Croatia have joined the EU and he no longer requires a work permit.

Kenneth Omeruo

The man who stopped Drogba is always going to have a certain ring to it for Chelsea fans and this man surely has a bright future at the club.

Player of the year at ADO Den Haag last season and an African Nations Cup winner with Nigeria the 19-year-old looks to be a future star.

He has turned down surgery on a shoulder injury picked up in his impressive Confederations Cup campaign in order to play in pre-season and he could genuinely be a first-teamer next season.

Kevin De Bruyne

Another returning loan star and this lad has bags of potential. Mourinho was impressed enough with his time at Werder Bremen last term to tell Borussia Dortmund to take a long hike in regards to their pursuit of the Belgian international and he will need a decent pre-season to earn a first-team place at The Bridge.

Romelu Lukaku

Lukaku had an excellent campaign at West Brom last season and will hope for more of the same with Chelsea this.

Mourinho has suggested he will feature in the first-team in 2013-14 and we may get an indication of how much this summer.

Who do you think we should keep an eye on this summer?
