Ante Rebic is a name that is familiar with Tottenham Hotspur fans yet he is never likely to play for them. His agent was the man who made the claims that the player, likened to former Croatian international Alen Boksic, was being watched regularly by Tottenham throughout last season.
However when Andre Villas-Boas was presented with this it was a revelation to him; as I have covered previously the Portuguese gaffer had never even heard of the lad:
"Rebic? I have no idea who this player is, I'm sorry. I don't know where this news has come from, not out of disrespect to the player but he's not someone I'm looking at."
But just because AVB doesn’t know who he is; it doesn’t mean he won’t be playing for a big club next season.
A forward who tends to play from the left he had scored 10 goals in 27 appearances for his club RNK Split last season and the 19-year-old is considered one of Croatia’s most promising talents.
The youngster is currently away with the Croatian representative side at the Under-20 World Cup and he played a pivotal role in their 1-0 victory over Uruguay in the opening game; scoring the only goal of the fixture.
He impressed again as Croatia drew with Uzbekistan 1-1; making the assist on the Marko Livaja goal that helped save their blushes.
And according to reports in Italy Rebic could be joining Atalanta compatriot Livaja in Serie A next season.
Many a top tier Italian outfit is said to have registered an interest in the player; with Genoan outfit Sampdoria leading the chase for the much-coveted player.
They have reportedly made an original bid believed to be in the region of €3 million for the teenager; with RNK Split wanting to hold out to a fee nearer the €5 million mark.
A team as small as RNK will eventually have to compromise on the details and allow their prized asset to continue his footballing development on the boot peninsula.
And maybe then AVB will have heard of him?
Will you be keeping an eye on Rebic’s progress?
