Stevan Jovetic has been perhaps the main protagonist of this summer’s transfer window; with a plethora of clubs reportedly lining up to take him off of Fiorentina’s hands ahead of the new season.
The Montenegrin has himself confirmed a desire to leave Florence after five years and big teams have been linked with his signature.
In England it looked all the world like Arsenal were originally the favourites for the 23-year-old but in the end it transpired The Gunners had never even made contact over a deal; with it now clear that Gonzalo Higuain was their main striking target for the summer.
Then came the interest of Chelsea; but with Jose Mourinho only just settling back into his surroundings nothing has come of that deal.
But most recently it has been Manchester City; once again linked strongly with the player.
They reportedly have first-refusal on the £25 million rated man and after selling Carlos Tevez to Juventus have effectively taken the Turin side out of the equation; while giving themselves more need to snap him up.
But on Thursday Jovetic was involved in a remarkable story in the Italian press; involving yet another City transfer target.
According to Italian reports the two clubs were interested in bartering a swap-deal involving both Jovetic and Stephan El-Shaarawy.
It seemed a spurious rumour at first sight and now Fiorentina sporting director Daniele Prada has stated his meeting with Milan CEO Adriano Galliani this week was a social affair; going on to brand the rumour as ‘pure fantasy’:
“I met Galliani casually in a restaurant, but we have absolutely no spoken exchanges between players. When you talk about a possible exchange between El Shaarawy and Jovetic, it comes to pure fantasy.”
Jovetic is certainly out of the price-range of Milan without so a swap-deal was the only plausible way they could ever be linked with the expensive commodity that is Jovetic; but this was far too far-fetched for even the most open-minded of football followers.
It just demonstrates how careful we all need to be when looking through transfer rumours this summer. As sometimes a rumour can come merely from two old friends grabbing a bite to eat.
