According to reports, the Serbian skipper is wanted at the San Siro by AC Milan. Whilst at present it’s only rumours and speculation, perhaps Red Devils fans could be tempted to agreeing to let their club captain go if one of these quality centre-backs were to come in as his replacement.
1) Ezequiel Garay
Ezequiel Garay is an interesting prospect – for starters, reports claimed earlier this month that he had already ‘signed’ for United in theory and that he’s expected to be a new addition imminently.
I would even go as far as to link the to separate stories, ‘Vidic to AC Milan’ and ‘Garay to United’ – it’s plausible that the two ‘stories’ at least are related. If the press conjure up the idea that United are importing a quality defender, it would make rational sense to assume there’d have to be a departure. The validity of both and or either stories, however, is still debatable.
2) Raphael Varane
Real Madrid’s 20-year-old prospect has also been linked with United in recent weeks. If he came in, I would expect him to be considered of a similar status, as Phil Jones is presently – a ‘monster’ in the making, as Sir Alex Ferguson infamously described his English counterpart. He’d be a fantastic addition.
3) Mats Hummels
For a more experienced acquisition, there is of course 24-year-old Mats Hummels who has also been linked with a move to United and the Premier League in general. The Borussia Dortmund and Germany centre-back is undoubtedly one of the finest defenders in the world at present and would represent an upgrade, frankly, on Vidic.
Of course, the worry will always be that United could pay over the odds for a player like Hummels and (like a number of his German international teammates who have taken to the Premier League) it takes time to adapt from the Bundesliga. The Premier League is far more intense.
4) Phil Jagielka
With that in mind, Moyes may chose instead to bring in someone a) he knows well but more importantly b) an English player. He couldn’t ask for much more in a quality English centre-back than Phil Jagielka. At 30 years old, he’s at the peak of his powers and could replace the experience and professionalism Vidic holds in the team at present.
5) Ryan Shawcross
A suggestion that has been mooted several times in the past is Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross who at 25 is the perfect age to join United and become a key player for potentially the next decade. He’s developed and matured into one of the finest defenders in the country and as Stoke skipper he possess ample leadership qualities.
