Arsenal might have hoped that Juventus’ move for Carlos Tevez, would have reduced the competition for two of their top targets this summer, with Stevan Jovetic and Gonzalo Higuain linked with both the Gunners and the Serie A champions, but they might now be facing competition from Real Madrid for the Fiorentina striker.
New manager Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly a fan of the Montenegrin, who at around £20million, might be targeted as a cheaper alternative to Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, who Real Madrid are also monitoring.
Arsenal have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Ligue 1 pair Clement Grenier and Serge Aurier, with the latter posting a picture of himself in an Arsenal shirt on Twitter. The 20-year-old right-back could be brought in as a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who only has one year left on his current contract at the Emirates.
Meanwhile Grenier has recently suggested would consider a move away from Lyon this summer, with Arsene Wenger known to be an admirer of the 22-year-old, who he compared to Samir Nasri. Both players would be excellent additions to the Arsenal squad, but perhaps lack the star power that Gunners fans are craving this summer.
In terms of departures, Johan Djourou is on the brink of leaving Arsenal for Hamburg, with the German club hoping to sign the defender on loan with an option for a permanent move. Djourou spent the second half of last season on loan at Hannover, who were also linked with a move for the 26-year-old.
One defender who looks unlikely to leave Arsenal this summer is Thomas Vermaelen, with Wenger set to give the Belgian another chance after deciding that Swansea City’s Ashley Williams is too expensive.
Vermaelen had a poor season at the Emirates last year, and fell behind Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in the pecking order. Vermaelen might have left the club if another centre-back had been signed, but with Arsenal unwilling to pay £10million for Williams, the Belgian is set to stay and fight for his place.
