Former Tottenham striker Gary Lineker questioned the value of his former club's top summer target, moments before the Brazilian struck the winner for his country last night.
Paulinho's winning goal for Brazil in their Confederations Cup semi-final could not have been better timed.
Not only did he save his team the nervousness and physical test of extra-time and potentially a penalty shoot-out, he answered a well-timed barb from the presenter of Match of the Day.
Gary Lineker, former Spurs striker, had questioned his old club's interest in the midfielder - at least the valuation they placed on him.
Spurs are said to have prepared a £17 million offer for Corinthians to consider, one which would constitute a new club record fee.
Here's what Lineker had to say on Twitter towards the end of the second half of last night's game.
How much have Spurs offered for Paulinho? Hmmmmm!— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) June 26, 2013
Then inevitably Paulinho popped up to head home the winner. And Lineker quickly, cheekily, retracted his comment. At least he didn't shy away from it.
Paulinho strikes. Worth every penny!— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) June 26, 2013
The pundit's discussion of the fee has at least opened a new debate. Has a goal in a high profile game as the semi-final actually created a problem for Spurs? Will new clubs join the bidding?
