Manchester United confirm departure of coach René Meulensteen

David Moyes has dispensed with René Meulensteen as first-team coach, the Dutchman becoming the last of Sir Alex Ferguson's senior backroom staff to depart the club.

Meulensteen follows Mike Phelan, the assistant manager, the goalkeeping coach Eric Steele and the chief scout Martin Ferguson, out of Manchester United.

Meulensteen, who turned down the chance to take up an alternative role at the club, said: "I would like to thank Sir Alex Ferguson, the owners, all colleagues, players and fans who made my time at Manchester United very special and one I will never forget. I wish everyone at this great football club all the best."

In a statement the club said: "Manchester United today confirmed the departure of first-team coach René Meulensteen." The executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, said: "I'd like to thank René for his contribution to the club, particularly since he returned to Old Trafford in 2007. He has been first-team coach for five years and in that time has given great assistance to Sir Alex Ferguson and Mick Phelan in keeping the team at the top of the game not only in this country but in Europe as well. On behalf of everyone at United, I wish him well for the future."

As first reported in the Guardian, Moyes made the decision regarding Meulensteen a month ago but the announcement has been delayed as the Dutchman has been negotiating the terms of his release.

On replacing Ferguson and leaving Everton as manager, Moyes identified his captain at Goodison Park, Phil Neville, for a coaching role, plus assistant Steve Round, the goalkeeping coach Chris Woods and the chief scout Robbie Cooke to also join him. Jimmy Lumsden, Everton's first-team coach, may also be under Moyes's consideration.

Meulensteen, who may now find himself in demand back home in the Netherlands, was mentioned in connection with the Wigan Athletic manager's job before Owen Coyle's appointment, and he has also been touted as a possible replacement for Stuart Pearce as the England Under-21 coach.
