Cristiano Ronaldo’s possible return to Manchester United has been greatly debated over the last few weeks and it could now start to gather some serious weight if the reports over a secret meeting are correct.
Ronaldo confirmed via Twitter that rumours over new contract talks with the Spanish club were untrue which should have set alarm bells ringing all over Old Trafford, signalling a spark of action to try and get him back.
It’s all very much behind closed doors because if the meetings were publicised and made official, FIFA would have something to say about it and it wouldn’t be nice.
Any deal to take Ronaldo back to United is not going to be cheap so initial talks could give the club a good indication over what the player is looking for in terms of personal demands.
United are in just as good a position as any other club when it comes to being able to pay a huge fee for this sort of player, but it’s the contract; the wages and the bonuses, which United may struggle to satisfy.
Ronaldo has always been very clear in his affection for the club and as much as he would want to return, he may be reluctant to do so if it means risking the wage structure at the club and upsetting other squad members in the process.
Ronaldo’s return may depend on the fact Sir Alex Ferguson is still very close to the team because Fergie has been described as Ronaldo’s father figure in football.
The player may want assurances that he can talk to Ferguson over his role in the side or just to sound him out over various things, which is something no one could blame David Moyes for being vary wary about.
Ronaldo may also want assurances over the players at the club and in particular the future of Wayne Rooney.
Rooney could be much more likely to stay at United if a Ronaldo return is on the cards because although it would obviously threaten his own position, United’s chances of dominating English football would be substantially higher.
It is possible that the talks or any meeting is just the player dropping in on his former club in an innocent way to catch up with friends he still has at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo admitted last season before the Champions League tie between Real Madrid and Manchester United that he still speaks with several individuals at Old Trafford.
However, it can easily be construed as a chance for the player and the club to get the ball rolling for his eventual return to Old Trafford.
Nothing is going to happen quickly when it’s a player of this profile and magnitude and it’s important to remember Real Madrid will more than likely try to keep him for at least another year if he’s not going to sign a new deal.
What d you think the secret meeting may be about?
