Online music streaming service to boast new home console and phone apps.

Watch out Spotify and Google Music, Microsoft is hopping on the audio streaming bandwagon with a beefed-up service that will feature apps for the company's line of phones and the Xbox home consoles.

The new service will go out over the software giant's music.xbox.com website, opening the service up to a range of new devices previously not supported by Microsoft, potentially even iOS and Android phones.

According to The Verge, Microsoft sources say the new system will match Spotify's web-based music player, letting users manage their tracks and playlists through their internet browsers.

Additionally, updated apps will improve performance on the Xbox 360,with support for playing music from an SD card and better integration with music from outside of the Xbox Music library.

This comes as Microsoft gears up for the release of its new Xbox One home console, which it bills as being an “all-in-one entertainment system”, with clear ambitions to be viewed as more than just a device for playing games on.
