Dortmund to offer €25 million to beat Liverpool to Mkhitaryan

Heinrich Mkhitaryan

Liverpool face a real threat in their efforts to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer.

Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has emerged as Liverpool's big transfer target summer, and at one stage last week it appeared as though they had all but secured him.

Rumours of the player being en route to Anfield for a medical were promptly denied by Shakhtar Donetsk, and the saga took a new twist yesterday when he went AWOL, failing to return to training.

Now there is a fresh twist in the saga, with German giants Borussia Dortmund threatening to gazump any Liverpool offer.

Dortmund had been rivalling Liverpool for another target, Danish whizkid Christian Eriksen, and the good news for the Reds is it is unlikely they will buy both.

The latest talk however concerns Mkhitaryan, with Bild reporting: "BVB is reportedly ready to put some 25 million euro transfer fee on the table! The BVB bosses are already (in) negotiations with Mkhitaryan."

Dortmund have cash to spend from the sale of Mario Gotze for €37 million Euros to Bayern Munich, with uncertainty also hovering over Robert Lewandowski.

There is no doubt Mkhitaryan would be impressed by Dortmund, they were the side who knocked his Shakhtar Donetsk team out of the Champions League earlier this season.

Having seen him first hand too, Dortmund are also said to be highly impressed by the star who netted 25 goals in 29 games last season.

Whether Liverpool can top the German side remains to be seen, and their failure to do so over the past fortnight might just be coming to haunt them.

Are you concerned about Dortmund's interest or can Liverpool still win the race for his signature?
