6. 1963 - President John Kennedy gives his, Ich bin ein Berliner (I am a Berliner) speech in West Berlin, a morale-boosting moment of defiance to the Soviet Union

7. 1977 - Elvis Presley's final concert takes place at Market Square Arena, Indianapolis

8. 1986 - Entrepreneur Richard Branson sets off on his second attempt to claim the transatlantic crossing record for Britain

9. 1970 - Riots break out in Londonderry, after it's revealed Bernadette Devlin has been arrested

10. 1979 - Muhammad Ali, one of the most famous fighters in history, retires from boxing

11. 2000 - The first map of the human genome, which required decoding more than 3bn biochemical 'letters' of human DNA, is completed
