Brendan Rodgers’ side were linked with the 26-year-old at the start of this month and he would be a fantastic addition to the current squad and a rare opportunity may have opened up for the club to snap him up.
Marca has reported that Real Madrid and Napoli are negotiating a deal for the midfielder with the issue being the fee.
According to the report, Napoli don’t want to pay the £10 million asking fee Real Madrid are demanding, putting forward a €10 million Euro offer, which works out at roughly the £7 million.
If Liverpool are interested in the player, that means they could cut Napoli out of the situation if they go above that offer and simply pay a fee that would be difficult for Real Madrid to turn down.
Callejon has no immediate future in the Real Madrid side, which means it should be very easy for Liverpool to convince him into a move if they want to add him to the recent signing of Luis Alberto from La Liga.
He’s also perfect for the club in terms of the style of football Liverpool currently play, based around slick pass and move football, with small and dynamic players controlling the attack of the team.
He’s been brought up around a club that is very big on identity and passion, two of the most important things Rodgers is trying to instil over his current Liverpool senior side and youth teams.
The problem Liverpool will have is convincing the player that they are a better proposition for him than Napoli; which could prove difficult considering the Italian outfit offer Champions League football next season.
There is also a question of whether they even need him because midfield overcrowding could quickly become a problem for the club if they keep signing midfielders - but he may just be preferable to a player like Jonjo Shelvey.
It’s also awkward for them because of the current talks which are happening between Real Madrid and the Italian club.
However, football in the modern era is ruthless and Liverpool can’t be blamed for taking an opportunity just because Napoli are playing hard ball over the price of a very talented player.
Should Liverpool go for Callejon?
