David Trezeguet - What could have been in the Premier League

David Trezeguet River

The Frenchman is preparing to make his next move. We have taken a look at how he 'almost' joined Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City.

While David Trezeguet will be remembered as a striker who had to play in the shadow of Thierry Henry for France, on his day he was a sensational striker in his own right.

He is currently in the news because at the age of 35 he has been told he is no longer in the plans of River Plate, left out of their squad for the forthcoming season in Argentina due to a knee injury, told he is not required at their pre-season training camp in a fortnight.

Reports in Brazil have even linked him with a move to Flamengo, with the club keen to pounce on the situation.

Trezeguet has enjoyed a fine career, winning two French titles, two Italian titles, and scoring the sensational Golden Goal at Euro 2000 which saw France lift the trophy over Italy.

Fans in the Premier League never got to see him first hand on a regular basis, save for occasional glimpses when their sides met him in the Champions League. It was a match for Monaco against Manchester United in 1998 which saw him strike a memorable goal which confirmed his emerging reputation.

But it wasn't for a lack of trying. Several top sides attempted to bring him in at various stages of his career. We have taken a look at who and when.

Arsenal - 2002 & 2007

Arsenal had the biggest incentive to sign Trezeguet, aiming to unite him with international strike partner Thierry Henry, who had described his compatriot as a 'dream' to play alongside. Back in 2002 Arsene Wenger tried to make a move for the striker who like Henry he knew from his time at Monaco. Jeff Powell of The Mail even wrote at the time, "The reason for wanting him runs to the core of what it takes to become and remain the dominant club in Europe. Trezeguet, potentially, is Arsenal's Ronaldo."

The Gunners were unsuccessful and Arsene Wenger tried again to snap him up from from Juventus in 2007, to try to deter Henry from leaving. He had rejected a new contract at Juventus, but the Gunners were still unable to close a deal. To rub salt in the wound just one month later their record goalscorer got his dream move to Barcelona.

Manchester City - 2009

Back in the January transfer window of 2009 Manchester City were linked with splashing out £20 million to sign Trezeguet. The said fee sounded excessive at the time and so it proved. It was just months after Sheikh Mansour had arrived at the club and spent £30 million on signing Robinho from Real Madrid, with the Frenchman's agent confirming the interest. Six months later City splashed out £25 million on Emmanuel Adebayor instead...

Liverpool - 2010

Trezeguet made a surprise move to sign for newly promoted Spanish minnows Hercules in 2010, but not before Liverpool had made an attempt to sign him up. He could have played alongside Fernando Torres up front at the time but new manager Roy Hodgson in a time of transition for the club was unable to win him over - and disastrously were too busy sorting out the sale of Javier Mascherano to Barcelona to give the deal their full attention.

The striker said afterwards: "Lazio, Roma and Liverpool were interested. But things went on. ‘The English club waited to sort out the transfer of Mascherano before starting anything else."

Do you wish Trezeguet joined your club? Would fortunes have changed if he had?
