Manchester United transfer news: Rooney-Ronaldo swap deal; Thiago edges closer

Cristiano Ronaldo United

A select round-up of transfer news relating to Manchester United, including Wayne Rooney and Thiago Alcantara.

Following yesterday’s stories that Wayne Rooney wanted Manchester United to deny his former manager’s claims that he asked for a transfer, it appears he will get his wish.

Reports this morning suggest the club now accept that Rooney did not ask to leave at the end of last season; although the England forward wants United to make that fact public. The 27-year-old’s relationship with the fans has been tarnished for a second time; and he is said to be furious as he did nothing to warrant it on this occasion.

A meeting will take place between the player and David Moyes next week, with the former said to be keen to stay at Old Trafford. It is thought that Ferguson’s departure has led to Rooney believing he can still be an integral part of the team, after playing much of last season in less favoured positions.

But as with any transfer rumour there are alternative versions. And other reports this morning suggest Rooney could still be on his way, with Arsenal and Real Madrid possible destinations.

The Gunners have long been linked with the player, and Arsene Wenger is said to be dreaming of a partnership between Rooney and new signing Gonzalo Higuain. Although the fact that the Frenchman is said to be considering Rooney in an attacking midfield role is unlikely to persuade him that his future is at the Emirates.

One other possible destination is the Bernabeu, with United said to be considering a swap deal between him and Cristiano Ronaldo. Odds on such a move have been slashed in the last few hours, with a number of bets being placed in England.

Do they know something we don’t? Or is it just another rumour that will be forgotten come tomorrow?

One player who looks increasingly likely to join United is Thiago Alcantara. The 22-year-old has been seeking assurances that he would play more games should he stay at Barcelona. But it is being reported that manager Tito Vilanova could not guarantee that in the face of competition from the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas.
