Chelsea transfer news: Trio wanted and van Ginkel promised games

A select round-up of transfer news relating to Chelsea, including Juan Mata, David Luiz, Fernando Torres and Marco van Ginkel.

It seems that Jose Mourinho’s first big job at Chelsea may not be to sign new players but to fend off interest for his current ones.

Reports suggest that Juan Mata, Fernando Torres and David Luiz are all garnering interest from some of Europe’s biggest (and biggest spending) clubs. Luiz’s future has been speculated about since Mourinho arrived, with the Brazilian’s defensive nous in question and a rumoured £30million offer from PSG being readied.

But the loss of Mata would be devastating…and surely incomprehensible.

Stories continue that Barcelona are keen on the player, and that Real Madrid wouldn’t be averse to his arrival either. Although with the likely arrival of Isco at the Bernabeu, that move is particularly unlikely.

In truth both moves are, with the Blues not needing to sell and Mata arguably their most talented and effective player.

An interesting piece published by TalkSport Magazine this morning examines the Mata story in great detail. And concludes – after some fascinating insight into the rumours – one thing: Mata is going nowhere.

Torres on the other hand could well be on his way, with former manager Rafael Benitez still keen to bring him to Napoli – should Edinson Cavani leave as expected.

Stories yesterday suggested that Dutch midfielder Marco van Ginkel was set to complete a £7.2million move to Stamford Bridge. And Mourinho has now reassured the midfielder that he will get plenty of game-time, despite the presence of numerous top quality midfielders currently plying their trade at Chelsea.

The deal is now said to be worth £9million. But for all Mourinho’s assurances, it is an interesting signing given the presence of Oscar, Eden Hazard, Juan Mata, Frank Lampard, Ramires, Victor Moses and Kevin De Bruyne to name a few.

And finally, despite yesterday’s reports that Wayne Rooney was considering a move to Stamford Bridge, it seems his future is at Old Trafford.  Manchester United are believed to be willing to openly admit that the England striker did not ask for a transfer at the end of last season. Either that or they will swap him for Cristiano Ronaldo…depending on which story you believe.
