Chelsea weekend round-up: Including Cavani talks and Romeu exit?

News and gossip from the past 48 hours at Stamford Bridge.

Edinson Cavani has again talked up the potential to join Chelsea this summer. Manchester City have pulled out of a race for the player considering his release fee was far more expensive than they were willing to match. It leaves Chelsea and Real Madrid as the only two likely destinations and Cavani stated when told of their interest:

'I'm flattered by the interest of certain teams. Who would ever say no to Real Madrid or Chelsea?’’

Thibaut Courtois will stay at Atletico Madrid for a third season. The Belgian is considered one of Europe’s best keepers and was officially the best in Spain last season. Despite this he was still expected to play second fiddle to Petr Cech next season; so he instead asked for one more season with Los Colchoneros to remain number one stopper for Belgium.

A fee for Marco van Ginkel has been confirmed according to some reports. The Dutch international has been on the radar of Chelsea for a while and it is now reported that a £7.2 million deal with Vitesse Arnhem has been confirmed. It is believed a move for the player has been hastened by Manchester United’s interest in the player.

Saint Etienne centre back Kurt Zouma has been speaking of his pleasure at being linked with Chelsea this week. The 18-year-old is ranked as one of the best young defenders in Europe and is also being courted by Anzhi, Bayern Munich and AC Milan. But Zouma said that hearing of interest from Jose Mourinho was flattering.

Oriel Romeu is reportedly a target for Valencia. The Spanish midfielder spent the majority of last season out with a nasty knee injury and with the departure of Rafa Benitez he feels that his first-team chances may diminish.
