Arsenal 'Gangnam Style' €20m January target in €6.5m Bundesliga switch

Adam Szalai will leave Mainz this summer; in a bargain move to Schalke 04.

Adam Szalai had an excellent season last year for Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga scoring 15 goals in 32 appearances. The former Real Madrid ‘B’ player finally started to prove his worth at the age of 25 and that form saw him linked with several clubs throughout the season.

Lazio, Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund all found themselves linked with his signature in January; as well as Arsenal.

However the main reason for the interest in the player may not have been due to his goalscoring exploits; but rather his celebration.

For when this Hungarian international puts the ball in the back of the net he celebrates by giving us all a rendition of the infamous Gangnam Style dance:

And at the time he was also being valued at a price more extravagant than a Psy suit.

"Arsenal haven't contacted us," claimed Mainz manager Christian Heidel. "We don't want to let our striker go in the winter transfer window. But that's another situation if someone willing to pay 20 million Euros for him."

The €20 million price-tag would certainly have scared off most the competition and considering it appeared there was no buy-out clause in his deal any lingering interest from The Gunners faded as quickly as it emerged.

However it now seems as if he is available for far less than the original quote.

Reports in Germany claim that Schalke 04 are on the verge of signing the striker in the coming days; at a cut-price deal of just €6.5 million.

Mainz have also started negotiations with VfB Stuttgart over a potential replacement in the form of Japanese international Shinji Okazaki.

It is reported that the Mainz striker does in fact have a release clause in his current deal so Arsenal could easily have got him in January if they had been more abrasive in their enquiries.

Nowadays Arsenal have moved on to bigger fish with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Wayne Rooney and Maraoune Fellaini all being lined up but if they did want to snap him up still the option is certainly still there.
