Jose Mourinho’s spell in charge at Real Madrid was tumultuous to say the least. When he wasn’t causing division among fans with his treatment of board members and star players he was angering the Spanish press with his forthright views and attitude.
But if his time at Real Madrid was difficult at least he wasn’t Rafa Benitez at Chelsea. The Spaniard was publicly lambasted for the majority of his time at Stamford Bridge and it was not until the fans realised he was actually a pretty decent manager that they finally took to him.
And interestingly enough a player who crosses the Mourinho-Benitez divide is the subject of this article; as it has been reported in the Spanish press this week that Alvaro Arbeloa could follow Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge this summer.
When Mourinho finally left Real this summer not many were quick to leap to his defence; that is it seems not the case for loyal full-back Arbeloa who had this to say:
"Yes, it's a shame that Mourinho is leaving because he has given his life for the club. He has sacrificed a lot for this club, and he has suffered.’’
‘’I don't think that anyone at this club, including the players, could say the same. There have been some people that have lacked maturity. There are some players that don't care about the image we have with the press, others care more about their public image.’’
"We are all responsible. Mourinho has won trophies everywhere he has been and it seems strange to me that this squad, which is the best, is the place where he's won the least."
After saying that it is certainly going to be difficult heading back into pre-season with the immature players who irritated him so much at the end of last season; so perhaps there is something behind the rumour on Spanish site Fichajes that Mourinho could find a place for Arbeloa at The Bridge.
Cesar Azpilicueta had a great season on debut last term whilst Branislav Ivanovic can do more than just fill in at right-back; so his purchase may be questionable.
But it would still remain interesting if one of Mourinho’s buys this summer was a former Benitez favourite at Anfield.
But considering his strained relationship with Real Madrid it is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility.
Do you think Arbeloa would be a good Chelsea signing?
