PSV Eindhoven working on a deal for Strootman's replacement

PSV Eindhoven

PSV Eindhoven could be lining up a replacement for Manchester United midfield target Kevin Strootman in the form of Stijn Schaars.

With the signing of Thiago all but made official, David Moyes may now quickly turn his attention to securing the more aggressive and imposing figure of Kevin Strootman from PSV Eindhoven.

Strootman is a player who has been linked with Manchester United for well over a year and De Telegraaf has published a report which suggests the Dutch club m ay be preparing for his departure.

Schaars is thought to be keen on a move back to Dutch football after spending time in Portugal playing for sporting Lisbon.

It seems like a potentially good deal for PSV because Schaars is a player with international experience, a contract due to expire shortly and he provides much more experience to PSV than Strootman because of the face he’s five-years older.

PSV are a well established Dutch club but they don’t have the huge financial resources enjoyed by other European sides that allow them to build big squads, which are unaffected by the sales of players.

In short, PSV seem to be lining up a replacement which means they could cope if Strootman completes a switch to Manchester United.

It’s a low risk strategy based around planning ahead over the high risk approach of only trying to replace a player once he’s actually departed from the club and signed for another side.

He’s also a player who can help the side cope with the recent decision of Mark van Bommel to step out of the game, which will allow the club to safely use exciting and aggressive attacking midfielders alongside him.

It could also be a hint that PSV want to bring in someone with leadership and experience who can rub off on the younger players at the club, who may be personally encouraged to pursue their own moves away through Strootman’s example, if he does leave.

The fact he’s a more defensive player than Strootman is important because PSV would be less willing to let him leave if they didn’t have a player they could rely on to curb the future of the players ultimately coming into the side to do Strootman’s attacking role.

Nothing was going to happen with the United-Strootman saga while the midfielder was playing for the Netherlands at the Under-21 European Championship.

Now that’s over, the player’s representatives are free to try and work out a deal with United if they still want the player and the interest is official.

It was always going to be very important for PSV to get an experienced Dutch player into the midfield who would help the side cope with the absence of van Bommel but more significantly Strootman.

Do you think United will sign Strootman? Do they need another midfielder after Thiago?
