Some messages are cryptic, others are blatantly obvious. In the case of Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, the words he wrote on Thiago Alcantara’s hat-trick ball appeared to leave little doubt about the Barcelona player’s next club.
Following Thiago’s hat-trick in the European Under-21 Championship final against Italy, De Gea wrote, “See you in Manchester.”
But the United player has now revealed that the comment was something of a joke.
Talking to Mundo Deportivo, De Gea said, “Any team you like to have a partner like Thiago. We talked about it in joke between us, but I don’t think that Barca (will) let him out.”
Although the presence of a release clause means that the Catalans may not have the final say, which made De Gea’s final comment the one United fans should perhaps focus on.
“Hopefully next season has a Spanish partner in the team,” he said.
The team he was referring to was his own, and there is little doubt the “partner” in question was Thiago.
With one player possibly arriving, another could be leaving before he has even kicked a ball.
Following previous interest from West Ham, Wilfried Zaha’s former club Crystal Palace are keen to take the winger on loan next season.
It seems unlikely, with Moyes a big fan of wingers and United almost certainly losing Nani this summer. But that hasn’t stopped Palace chief executive Phil Alexander discussing the possibility.
“It’s another option, clearly that’s up to Manchester United,” he said. “Will we be asking? We’ll probably ask in passing but it’s really down to them.”
