Galatasaray Mikel interest boosts Luiz' Chelsea chances?

Chelsea defensive midfielder John Obi Mikel has admitted he would be open to a switch to Galatasaray.

That’s superb news if you’re a David Luiz fan because it increases the chances he’ll stay at the club, as Jose Mourinho will be under less pressure to use him as a central defender.

The reason David Luiz was linked with a move away from Chelsea following Mourinho’s appointment at Stamford Bridge, is because the Portuguese coach has issues with his ball retention.

Several reports claimed that Mourinho would be reluctant to use David Luiz in the middle of defence because he gives the ball away too much and is too rash to play in his defence.

This news now means that if Mikel completes a move to Turkey, it frees up that holding midfield position which is where David Luiz seems to want to play and where Mourinho will probably be more willing to play him.

“I'm very pleased with Galatasaray's offer. I asked Drogba for advice and he told me that Istanbul is a fantastic city, that Galatasaray is a huge club and that I have to make the move,” Mikel told Turkish newspaper Sabah.

Mourinho still has other options at holding midfield such as Ramires, who played there for most of last season, and Michael Essien, a player very experienced in that position.

However, David Luiz could be the better alternative to both because he provides the chance for Mourinho to release Ramires’ more creative and attacking tendencies from that restrictive position.

That in turn decreases the need for the club to go out and buy another attacking player, also improving the chances that Juan Mata will be axed from the midfield as some sources have suggested.

It also allows Mourinho to maintain the positive relationship he already has with several sections of Chelsea supporters.

Had he sold David Luiz he would have become less popular than he currently is and football is very much an industry which is based around and dependant on the men in the main positions having the support of the mass public.

It bypasses a major issue for Mourinho but also offers him options.

He will now be able to use David Luiz at holding midfield but he can also slot various players into that position if the club start picking up an unfortunate run of injuries or suspensions.

John Obi Mikel, you may well have just saved David Luiz from the Chelsea axe.

Should David Luiz start at defensive midfield next season? Why do you think Mikel has chosen Turkey?
