Arsenal latest: Including Sagna contract and Illarramendi

News and gossip from the past 24 hours at The Emirates.

The Gonzalo Higuain deal just keeps getting more tantalising as more reports today suggest a deal is imminent. It is reported that Arsenal have now all but agreed terms with the Argentine striker himself over a £125k-a-week contract for the 25-year-old to play in North London next season. All that is left is for both Arsenal and Real to agree on a transfer fee for the player; with an offer of £22 million said to be all that is needed to snap him away from the Spanish capital.

Bacary Sagna claims he is still in contract talks with the club over an extension to his current deal. At the moment the French international would become a free agent in the summer of 2014 and he has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and AS Monaco. However he stated he is ‘looking forward’ to playing for Arsenal next season.

This morning the Daily Star reported that Arsenal missed out with a late bid for new West Ham striker Andy Carroll. They report that The Gunners made a last minute attempt to hijack the Carroll to West Ham move but failed as the Geordie striker had already agreed terms over a deal at Upton Park.

Alisher Usmanov has urged Arsenal to buy Wayne Rooney this summer. The England international is said to be unhappy at Old Trafford and the Russian oligarch believes Rooney would be a ‘great success’ at the club. Usmanov holds a 29.9% share in the club and if he had his way would happily finance such a deal.

Yaya Sanogo’s transfer to Arsenal has now been completed. The French youth international passed a medical back in May and has finally completed all the formalities on a deal to become Arsenal’s first signing of the summer.

Arsenal’s interest in Asier Illarramendi is said to be picking up. The Real Sociedad midfielder, 23, has just come off the back of winning the European Under-21 Championships in Israel and The Gunners are said to be leading the chase for a player considered the ‘next Xabi Alonso’. However he may be expensive; after signing a six-year-deal until 2018 in November last year.

Finally and another Arsenal target may be about to agree a transfer elsewhere. Etienne Capoue is negotiating a deal with Monaco as well. The French international was recently informed that he can leave his current club Toulouse for €15 million this summer. It now seems Monaco have struck first blood in the pursuit of the player.
