Tottenham Hotspur will likely face a summer of rumours about their star player Gareth Bale, but for now at least, the future of manager Andre Villas-Boas looks secure, with the Portuguese apparently turning down PSG to stay at White Hart Lane for at least another season.
It might have been an uncomfortable couple of weeks, but could the Ligue 1 champion’s interest work out in Spurs favour in the long run this summer, as with another offer on the table, Villas-Boas could have asked for some clear assurances about the ambition of the club.
There have already been reports that the manager has asked for three new players this summer, with Leandro Damiao, David Villa and Paulinho at the top of his list, and the appointment of Franco Baldini also looks to be a move in line with Villas-Boas’ wishes.
For Spurs fans, the manager having a little more say in the transfer market is a good thing, and having Baldini taking some of the responsibility away from Daniel Levy might see them make earlier moves this summer, rather than waiting for the end of August in order to try and secure the lowest price on any players they buy.
To keep Villas-Boas, and indeed convince Bale to stay, Spurs need to show ambition in improving their squad to compete with the other sides in the top seven in the Premier League, who are all likely to do plenty of business themselves this summer.
Villas-Boas’ decision might also help in ensuring Bale does stay, as the manager has a close relationship with Spurs’ star player, and has turned down a big money move himself.
Of course nothing is guaranteed, and Spurs might delay their business until the end of August anyway, but if Villas-Boas has rejected a move to PSG, you might expect that he believes that Tottenham are about to match his ambition in the transfer market, and that can only be good news for their fans.
