Wayne Rooney's Transfer Options - Where will he play in 2013/14?

Rooney Warm Up

Shortly after Sir Alex Ferguson announced that he was retiring as Manchester United manager, he also told the media that Wayne Rooney had handed in a transfer request.

This past season, Rooney saw his position as first choice striker taken over by Robin van Persie, and he scored only 16 goals. Despite his dip in form, a number of top clubs have been rumoured to want his services.

Arsenal

Arsenal is one of the clubs rumoured to want Rooney. Manager Arsene Wenger is apparently keen to bring him to the Emirates, and the club have been looking for a consistent striker, since van Persie went to Manchester United last season.

Although Arsenal are regular competitors in the Champions League, they haven't won a trophy since 2004, and Rooney might regard playing there as a step down. It would however keep Rooney in England, and his presence might re-energize the club.

Chelsea

Several news outlets have been reporting that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich wants to sign Rooney and is willing to pay £30 million for the striker. Chelsea have been linked to a number of players already this summer, including Eden Dzeko and Edinson Cavani. Fernando Torres's future at Stamford Bridge is still uncertain and Chelsea are looking to bring in another world-class striker.

A transfer to Chelsea seems to be one of the less likely rumours though. As one of Manchester United's biggest rivals, Rooney would undoubtedly receive a hostile welcome from the Chelsea fans. Incoming manager Jose Mourinho is also likely to bring several players with him from Real Madrid, so it’s hard to say if there will be room for Rooney at the club.

PSG

French club Paris Saint Germain were one of the first clubs rumoured to want Rooney. PSG has revitalized itself this past season, winning the Ligue 1 title and making it into the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

They are looking to sign world-class talent and emerge as genuine contenders in the Champions League next season. PSG have plenty of money to spend this summer and are apparently willing to offer Rooney a £300,000 a week deal. They are looking to bolster their attacking options in particular. At the moment, PSG seems like the most likely place he could end up. Rooney may relish the fresh challenge of playing in a foreign league and sources are reporting that he has already started negotiations with the club.

Staying at Manchester United

Rooney talked about wanting a transfer several seasons ago, but he was convinced to stay with a new contract. It's possible that David Moyes, who previously managed him at Everton, could still persuade Rooney to stay at Manchester United. The two have some bad blood between them though, as Moyes sued Rooney back in 2010. However, Rooney still has two years left on his current contract, and United are reluctant to let him leave so all bets on football are currently off. Rooney seems determined to leave this time, and it's likely he will go.

But with these complicated factors in play, the transfer saga may well drag on until the summer window closes in August.
