Reports from Spain suggest that Barcelona’s Thiago Alcantara is on the verge of leaving the club. The Catalan newspaper Sport has revealed that the midfielder has decided to move to the Premier League this summer, with two offers from English clubs on the table. One of these is believed to be Manchester United although the other is as yet unknown.
There is little doubt the Spaniard would excel at Old Trafford, his creativity and talent perfect for a side that has been lacking in the midfield department for some time. Should the reports be true, and Thiago ultimately moves to United, David Moyes will have signed a player who may not just maintain the club’s recent league success, but assist them in their quest to better it.
Another midfielder linked (once again) with United in recent hours is PSV Eindhoven’s Kevin Strootman. Reports suggest the box-to-box midfielder has his heart set on a move to England and his agent has talked about the possibility.
“He has the physique, the character and the fitness for it,” he said. “I am certainly not afraid he could handle that level.”
Strootman and Thiago to rejuvenate the United midfield? Few fans of the club would reject that potential partnership.
One player who may join them in time is Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been urged to remain at current club Real Madrid for 18 months before agreeing a return to Old Trafford.
With only two years left on his current deal, he would be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement in January 2015 for a June switch. How his current club feel about losing their star-man for nothing remains to be seen; and it is likely that should he continue to refuse a new contract he will be sold before his transfer value decreases further.
