Last week the rumours linking Brazilian international Paulinho to Tottenham Hotspur picked up but I for one immediately readied myself for disappointment on this deal.
Much like perennial Spurs target Leandro Damiao this guy’s name pops up every now and again before eventually, due to various bizarre reasons, nothing ever happens; but this time it really did seem possible.
Reports suggested his agent had been in talks with Franco Baldini while he was at AS Roma; talks that had been productive. So when Baldini moved to Tottenham those negotiations were simply transferred and the dream midfield partnership of Sandro and Paulinho looked a possibility.
When Paulinho then confirmed that his agent Giuliano Bertolucci was in fact in London; then the rumours really gained credence.
Until yesterday morning that is when Paulinho went and did his usual spoiling act over his future.
The Corinthians midfielder had this to say about his new agents visit to the English capital:
“He is not negotiating. Giuliano has many clients. I am not the only one. He is in England, admittedly, but he works for many players. They say that Giuliano is working for me to leave Corinthians, but that is not the case. He has his work with other players and I don’t understand why people persist with this story.”
So, keeping in line with Paulinho’s wishes, for the rest of this story I will not mention his potential move to Spurs (bit of a Buzz Killington this Paulinho guy).
Immediately rumours then spread that another Tottenham target was also represented by Bertolucci; fellow Brazilian Bernard.
Because of course the greatest migratory country for professional footballers only has one representative agent.
Of course not and in fact Bernard and Paulinho are unfortunately represented by different companies but what was Bertolucci doing in London then?
Well he represents some pretty famous names; in particular those of a Chelsea disposition including Oscar, David Luiz and former player Alex. But while tentatively Luiz has been linked with Barcelona I doubt they can afford him and doubt Chelsea would let him go.
He also represents the likes of Luisao, Juan Jesus and Marquinhos but I would be surprised to see them joining any of the London clubs this summer.
But his representation of Lucas Piazon might be a clue to his real purpose of visit.
Piazon is being linked with a loan move away this summer; with Liverpool even being linked and it could be he was trying to seal a good move for one of his younger clients this summer.
Or he was trying to earn former Manchester City and Everton striker Jo, another of his clients, an unlikely move back to the Premier League.
Then there is always the possibility he was trying to seal a deal for Paulinho after all.
